DCRP discusses Katrina
In the aftermath of the Katrina Hurricane, we all had questions about
the disaster that touched
so many aspects of planning. The daunting process of recovery
in the face of such destruction
is made even more difficult amid the continued vulnerability of New
Orleans’ location, rampant
social injustices and the apparent ineffectiveness of public services.
To engage
students in the many questions that this tragedy posed, DCRP held a
workshop that
allowed faculty to share their areas of expertise and engage students
in important discussions
about rebuilding communities. Tapping into the in-depth knowledge
of almost the entire DCRP
faculty, workshop topics and panel members included: New Orleans flooding
and evacuation
(Dave Moreau, Dave Brower, and Asad Khattak); Environment, economics
and housing panel
(Ray Burby, Harvey Goldstein, and Bill Rohe); and Recovery: prospects
and options (Phil Berke,
Tom Campanella ,and Paul Kapp).
