PLAN 704 Planning Theory

Research and Practice

Dr. Kaza studies the phenomena of plans and their uses in public and private decision-making. To illuminate these, he works on complex systems, optimization, analytical reasoning, uncertainty and institutional structure. In addition, he is interested in land use modeling, environmental impacts and planning support systems.

In recent years, Dr. Kaza worked to develop a loosely coupled planning support system for Maryland and surrounding areas to link economic, demographic, transportation, land use, water quality models. As a part of an ongoing work to illustrate the impacts of multiple but uncertain futures on the landscape as well as the environmental impacts on the Chesapeake Bay, this system is geared towards capturing and analysing scale variant land use, transportation and environmental processes.

In other work, he has worked on standardization of planning information in conjunction with GIS.  More information and publications can be found at his website
