PLAN 636 Urban Transportation Planning (every year)

  • Fundamental characteristics of the urban transportation system as a component of urban structure.
  • Methodologies for analysis of transportation problems, planning urban transportation, and evaluation of plans.

PLAN 738 Transportation Policy and Planning (every other year)

Current discussions and methodologies.
Four parts:
 
  • Role of government in transportation markets
  • Evaluation of transportation decisions
  • Policy responses to congestion problems
  • Neglected aspects of transportation policy: environmental and social protection.

PLAN 637 Transportation Strategy and Planning (every other year)

Emphasizes how land uses can improve efficiency and effectiveness of transit.
Four parts:
  • Introduction to transit planning,
  • Short and medium-term planning and analysis,
  • Land development as a long-term strategic alternative, and
  • Transit-oriented land uses -- the Transit Metropolis

Relevant Courses at UNC, NCSU and Duke

Students are encouragaed to take classes from other departments of UNC, such as the School of Public Health, and the Institute for the Environment, among others. UNC is conveniently located in the Research Triangle Park area. Students can also take classes at the Duke University and North Carolina State University. In the past, students have been taking classes from the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences of the Duke University and Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) of the North Carolina State University.
