Professor Ed Kaiser retires
Ed Kaiser, long-time faculty member in DCRP, fully retired on July 1.
Ed taught land use planning and quantitative methods courses for 37
years - since 1965. Prior to full retirement, he had been on a half-time,
phased retirement, appointment for the past three years.
Ed came up through the ranks, teaching first as a lecturer, then an
instructor, then assistant professor, and then associate professor,
before being appointed a full professor in 1973. At one time or another
he directed the masters degree program and the Ph.D. program, served
as associate chair, and eventually served as chair of the department.
He was also vice-president and program chairman of the Association of
Collegiate Schools of Planning
at a time when that organization began its annual conferences, separate
from APA conferences. He co-
edited the Journal of the American Planning Association, with his close
colleague, Ray Burby. He was
elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners
in 2001. He is author or co-author of
over 75 publications, including the classic textbook, Urban Land Use
Planning, and most recently,
Smart Growth Starts with Smart Planning.
Ed continues to use an office in New East part time, where he is working
with Dave Godschalk and
Phil Berke on the 5th edition of Urban Land Use Planning. Otherwise
Ed is enjoying golf, botanical
illustration, and his growing extended family. He is always happy to
hear from alumni.
